Associations and professional organzations are their specific industry's experts as they collect the data that matters to them or their members. They may prove especially helpful for small, emerging, or niche industries.
Trade associations often publish their own market research reports, briefings about legal and regulatory issues, and consumer or demographic profiles which give insight into the industry. The information may be freely available on the association's website. If there are no obvious links to information on an association's home page, look for sections titled 'research' or 'publications'.
Consider contacting them for specific information that is not freely available online, as it may be for members only. (Be sure to mention that you are a student doing a class project -- and use your SMU e-mail address!)
